Small Housing Unit – A Ladder of Hope and Livelihoods
For many years, Amina Bibi lived with her family in a small room inside her in-laws’ house. Life was difficult, and there was little space and no opportunity to grow.
Things began to change when she received a Small Housing Unit (SHU). This new house not only gave her family privacy and dignity, but also opened the door to new possibilities. Amina through SPPAP project team efforts was identified as landless and eligible on the basis of her poverty score. She became member of CO Karam Hussain Thatar of village Dandanot, union council Tranda Muhamma Panah of Tehsil Liaquatpur, District Rahim Yar Khan.
With her own space, Amina started keeping goats and livestock. From her first few animals, she worked hard and managed to sell three bucks for Rs. 60,000. With this income, her family decided to purchase a motorbike on installment, which made travel and work easier. Her husband, a skilled mason, could now reach work sites more quickly, while Amina continued to manage the livestock at home.
Step by step, the family’s life improved. Today, Amina owns five goats worth Rs. 120,000 and a cow with a calf worth Rs. 170,000. Her children, who once faced uncertainty, are now all going to school, giving hope for a brighter future.
A Helping Hand
Haleema Mazhar is a resident in union council Panjgaraen. She is illiterate and lives with her four daughters and one son. Her husband is a cook in Karachi and has a monthly income of 20,000 PKR. She has a poverty score of 17 on National Poverty Scorecard and is a BISP beneficiary. Her son is of twenty years and has passed secondary school certificate from Panjgaraen while of her four daughters, two are studying and two have completed their secondary school certificate. With her husband out of city on an ordinary blue-collar job, it was very difficult for her to manage the expenditures of her household and at times the family had to skip one time meal of the day in order to keep the financial circle running. Moreover, the family had to look for financial help in the form of loans towards other households of the society. The financial position of the family was getting deteriorated day by day and the family was at the verge of getting financially defaulted.
Government of Punjab, with assistance of IFAD started Southern Punjab Poverty Alleviation Project (SPPAP) in Darya Khan Tehsil of district Bhakkar. To her luck, union council Panjgaraen was selected in the project with her village prioritized due to high poverty ratio. A community organization was formed in her village and she became member of the community organization Nadir Shah F. Haleema was full of ideas but did not have the adequate resources to help share the financial burden of her family. During the year 2020-21, she was selected for two goat package ass her PSC score came under the criteria of small ruminants package and she was provided with two goats in 2020. It was not difficult for her to manage the ruminants, as in rural areas females look after the livestock.
After one year her goats gave birth to four offsprings, out of which two were males and two females. During the second year, three offsprings were produced out of which two were males and one was female. The third time, two offsprings were produced out of which one was male and one was female. In four years, her goats have multiplied by 5 times and a total of 9 offsprings have been produced.
The beneficiary’s son also went to Karachi to seek work but due to his qualification status, he was unable to get any work. Upon returning of his son, Haleema decided for her son to open a vegetable shop in her locality of Basti Nadir Shah. For that she sold one offspring for 54,000 and got the seen money for opening of shop. Her son is now running the shop for more than a year now and is able to earn 25,000 PKR on average monthly.
